Andere Atelier / L’Autre Atelier

November 2020-January 2021; April-June 2021; September 2022-February 2023

Citywide

L'Autre Atelier is a series of debates, exploratory walks and urban planning workshops that explore the theme of road safety in Brussels neighbourhoods. We invite the people of Brussels to discover surprising initiatives from inspiring cities, observe the challenges on the ground and imagine what a safe and healthy city could look like in the future.

The first edition in 2021 aimed to bring the road safety debate back to street level, to complement the planning process for the Brussels government's new road safety action plan 2021-2030. L'Autre Atelier is the result of a collaboration between the citizens' movements BRAL, Filter Café Filtré Atelier and Heroes for Zéro, and is funded by Bruxelles-Mobilité.

They are living labs allowing residents to imagine what their street could look like when redesigned as places to live in instead of driving through. Over the years, Heroes for Zero has organised several summer streets in two neighbourhoods in Brussels- Pôze Midi (Saint-Gilles) and “Heyzel Vivant” (Heyzel). Temporarily pedestrianising these streets blocks crucially also prevented speeding in two areas prone to “urban rodeos”.

These projects were funded by the subsidy “Bruxelles en vacances” from Bruxelles-Mobilité.
